About the Journal

The Natural Disasters journal is a specialized publication in the field of disasters, publishing articles in Persian with English abstracts. Its scope includes disaster management, risk prevention and reduction (including early warning indicators, forecasting, damage estimation, theories, algorithms, and risk assessment models), disaster preparedness, response, recovery and rehabilitation after disasters, resilience, technology and innovation in disaster management, participatory and community-based approaches, and disaster risk governance. Given the difficulty in distinguishing between human-made and natural hazards, submitted articles may address disasters resulting from natural hazards such as earthquakes and storms, or human-made hazards such as road accidents.

In accordance with Article 13 of the Press Law ratified on March 18, 1986, by the Islamic Consultative Assembly, and with the approval of the Supervisory Board of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance in its meeting dated February 18, 2025, the publication license for the Natural Hazards journal was issued in Persian and English, with quarterly publication frequency, national distribution, and magazine format. The license was granted to the Natural Disasters Research Institute under registration number 97381, dated March 20, 2025.

All articles submitted to Natural Disasters undergo an initial screening and are subject to a double-blind peer review process by at least two expert reviewers. Final acceptance and publication are contingent upon approval by the editorial board. Authors and researchers are kindly requested to prepare their manuscripts according to the journal's submission guidelines and to submit them through the journal's online system. Please refrain from in-person visits or phone calls to the journal office as much as possible. All correspondence with authors and reviewers is conducted via the journal website and submission system.

The Policy of Screening for Plagiarism We accept all terms and conditions of COPE regarding plagiarism in a submitted manuscript, and in case any attempt of plagiarism is brought to our attention accompanied with convincing evidence, we act based on flowcharts and workflows determined in COPE.
All manuscripts must be free from plagiarism contents. Manuscripts submitted to the journal of Natural Disasters will be screened for plagiarism using similarity check and plagiarism detection tools. All authors are suggested to use plagiarism detection software to check the similarity before submitting their manuscript to the journal. Editors check the plagiarism detection of manuscripts in the journal of Natural Disasters using the Grammarly detection software (www.grammarly.com), and iThenticate (www.ithenticate.com) for English abstracts and use Iranian plagiarism detection software such as IranDOC (https://tik.irandoc.ac.ir) and Samimonour (www.samimnoor.ir) for the Persian text. The journal will immediately reject papers leading to plagiarism or self-plagiarism. Whenever it is determined that the manuscript has not complied with the plagiarism rules, it will be REJECTED (before acceptance for publication), and if it was published, it will be RETRACTED for plagiarism issues. The journal of Natural Disasters aims to ensure that all authors are careful and comply with international standards for academic integrity, particularly on the issue of plagiarism. Plagiarism occurs when an author takes ideas, information, phrases, or words from another source without proper credit to the source. Even when it occurs unintentionally, plagiarism is still a serious ethical violation and unacceptable in scientific academic publications.
Retraction Policy An article may be retracted when its findings are no longer considered trustworthy due to scientific misconduct or error, it plagiarizes previously published work, or it is found to violate ethical guidelines. An article may be retracted when the integrity of the published work is substantially undermined owing to errors in the conduct, analysis, and/or reporting of the research. Violation of publication or research ethics may also result in a study’s retraction. The original paper will be marked as RETRACTED, but a PDF version remains available to readers, and the RETRACTION statement is bi-directionally linked to the original published paper. Retraction statements will typically include a statement of assent or dissent from the authors.
Type of Publication (Processing Charges and Publication Charges) No publication charges are required from the author.
 Full-text access: Open Access

The order of the authors (as to be reflected in the published article) has been established. The addition or deletion of authors once the manuscript has been accepted for publication would have to be accompanied by a signed statement of consent from all authors. All authors have contributed significantly to the research. Authors are obligated to participate in the peer review process, providing retractions/corrections/amendments when necessary. All conflicts of interest/financial support have been declared. Any changes or corrections to a published work require the consent of all authors.

Data Citation Data should be cited in the same way as article, book, and web citations, and authors are required to include data citations as part of their reference list. Data citation is appropriate for data held within institutional, subject-focused, or more general data repositories. It is not intended to take the place of community standards such as in-line citation of GenBank accession codes. When citing or making claims based on data, authors must refer to the data at the relevant place in the manuscript text and in addition provide a formal citation in the reference list. The journal of Natural Disasters follows the format proposed by the Joint Declaration of Data Citation Principles: Authors; Year; Dataset title; Data repository or archive; Version (if any); Persistent identifier (e.g. DOI)”.

Identifying information, including names, initials, etc., should not be published in written descriptions, photographs, or pedigrees unless the information is essential for scientific purposes and the participants (or parent or guardian) give written informed consent for publication. Informed consent in this situation requires that an identifiable participant be shown the manuscript, providing consent before publication. Authors should disclose to these patients whether any potential identifiable material might be available via the Internet as well as in print after publication. Participants' consent should be written and archived either with the Journal of Natural Disasters, the authors, or both, as dictated by local regulations or laws.
Declaration of generative AI in scientific writing Where authors use generative artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process, they should only employ these technologies to improve readability and language. The application of AI technology must be accompanied by human oversight and control. Authors should carefully review and edit the results because AI can generate authoritative-sounding output that can be incorrect, incomplete, or biased. AI and AI-assisted technologies should not be listed as authors or co-authors, nor should they be cited as an author.  Authorship implies tasks and responsibilities that are uniquely attributed to and performed by humans. Authors should disclose their use of AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process by following the instructions provided. A statement acknowledging this use will appear in the published article. It is essential to recognize that authors remain ultimately responsible and accountable for the content of their articles.Disclosure instructions: Authors should disclose in their manuscript the use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process by adding a statement at the end of their manuscript in the core manuscript file, before the References list. The statement should be placed in a new section entitled ‘Declaration of Generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process’.Statement: During the preparation of this work the author(s) used [NAME TOOL / SERVICE] in order to [REASON]. After using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as needed and take(s) full responsibility for the content of the publication. This declaration does not apply to the use of basic tools for checking grammar, spelling, references etc. If there is nothing to disclose, there is no need to add a statement.
